Virginia

1202 curated trails across 14 parks — from the Blue Ridge spine to DC-adjacent Piedmont.

Live · updated

Virginia’s trail country splits into three bands. Shenandoah National Park runs the Blue Ridge spine for ~105 miles with 500+ miles of trails, including the Old Rag scramble and a long stretch of the Appalachian Trail. The Piedmont and Northern Virginia — Great Falls, Prince William Forest, Manassas Battlefield, the W&OD — offer DC-adjacent access without the highway grind. And the western reaches at Harpers Ferry NHP’s Loudoun Heights and the George Washington National Forest extend into genuine mountain terrain.

Permits, parking, and access

Shenandoah National Park charges a per-vehicle entry fee good for seven days; the America the Beautiful annual pass covers it. Virginia State Parks (Sky Meadows, Mason Neck, First Landing) charge per-vehicle parking fees that vary by season; an annual VA State Parks pass is available. Northern Virginia regional parks (NOVA Parks system) and Fairfax County parks generally have free trail access but may charge for special facilities.
